Being a Reiki practitioner I love to spend my time helping people to heal themselves through the unique healing power of Reiki (universal healing energy). I often advise them to take time out for themselves and to spend some time alone, walking in the woods, practising yoga, exercise or mediation. Recently I failed to listen to my own advice and had 3 weeks of colds and a migraine. It was only when a Reiki client and fellow Reiki practitioner offered to give me a Reiki treatment that I realised I had one again neglected myself. After all how can I help people heal and channel this wonderful Reiki energy if I am poorly and not the best conductor for the Reiki that I can be?
So, my week long self care challenge started. I got off to a great start; I did daily yoga, meditation and Reiki self healing, then 6 days into it. Guess what? When I really needed the time out to self care. I did not want to do it. I was almost in a huff with self healing, why can`t I feel better watching Made in Chelsea or Celebrity Hunted"? I asked myself. I started looking at my phone more, expecting to find the answer on Facebook as I scrolled down the endless pointless shit, with a few interesting facts.
Why was it so hard to want to look after myself everyday?
I remember a Buddhist mediation teacher who once said " What do you think will happen if you sit in silence for 10 minutes? Why are you so afraid of being still, alone and just with your thoughts?" A colleague once asked me what mediation was, and I explained that its when you sit with your eyes closed and are still for about 10 minutes. She looked and me in horror and asked "Why would you do that"?
It`s like we are programmed to find our self care in noise, people, the TV, our phones or anything at all that would stop us from JUST BEING STILL.
I do know for a fact that when you live in a state of stress and anxiety, your body goes in to fight or flight mode the "stress hormone" Cortisol is released in response to stressful situations, but is also a normal and healthy part of our hormone system. However, when people experience high stress on a daily basis their cortisol levels become chronically increased and we see negative impacts on their health.
So why would not want to spend time doing self care?
Lets roll out the yoga mat, go to the gym, meditate, book a Reiki treatment, spend time alone or lets just start with that long walk to the beach/woods or even just down your street.
Your body and mind will thank you for it.
Let's look after our self, even if it`s just for 10 minutes a day. We can do it.
